ABC Radio Interview: The Secret Sound Excursion

I was invited to speak with Jane Longhurst about my work, my values & beliefs around singing in our society, and my new free resource “The Secret Sound Excursion” which guides you through a playful exploration of the voice, in secret locations, for those who have a secret yearning desire to sing… but would be terrified to be heard by others. Listen below:

The Happychondriac Podcast

I spoke to the effervescent Husna Pasha of The Happychondriac Podcast, where she talks about mental health issues with a lighthearted approach.

We discussed:
– Our mutual experiences with disordered eating & body dysmorphia
– The experience of feeling like you are “too much”
– Trauma-informed facilitation
– Why meditation & breath work might not be good for everyone
– Nervous system study, Polyvagal theory, and the Window of Tolerance
– …and she also made me sing a little right at the end, haha.

Music Tasmania Podcast: Bec Tilley & The Secret Singers Society

I spoke to Keith from the fantastic organisation Music Tasmania about my approaches to vocal coaching & teaching, my Secret Singers Society and Secret Singing Lessons.  Click here to check it out on the Music Tas website, or you can find it in Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or your favourite podcast app by searching “Music Tas Bec Tilley.”

Our conversation included discussions about:

– Our culture’s artificial separation between performer & audience, the myth of the “god-given talent”, my belief that singing is for EVERYONE
– Why you’re probably not tone deaf
– Elitism in the music world, and why you don’t need to know music theory to sing or be a musician
– Why singing is such a vulnerable experience
– How your nervous system reacts to singing in front of people, why feeling nervous (or even TERRIFIED) is absolutely normal and understandable
– My experience of anatomy based technique via the Estill Voice Training Model, how the voice is a really versatile instrument, and we are not limited to only one kind of sound or style of singing
 – Why it can be confronting to record yourself singing for the first time
– Why you shouldn’t compare your voice to the voices you hear on the radio, and the concept of “photoshopped voices”
– Our culture’s lack of spaces and opportunities for “casual singing”
… and heaps more!

This was a super fun and enjoyable conversation, and really outlines my values in my work.  Very thankful to Keith for having me on the show.

With David Sauvage: A Gentle Conversation About Practice & Discipline For Artists

This is a recording from an online event I hosted with my wise friend David, an expert on emotional intelligence who often speaks on the role of creativity in our lives.

“Here’s a conversation for artists, musicians, writers, creatives and anyone who has a creative practice they want to build into their lives consistently.

We want to help you, and help ourselves, fit a creative practice into our lives in a healthy way. We’ll be exploring questions like:

How much is enough practice? Is there such a thing as too much? What is the purpose of creative expression in our lives? How important is it to create a structure for your practice in your life? Is it okay to practice music or art if you’re not trying to make a profession out of it? How can we cultivate the discipline we want?

This conversation will be especially resonant if you feel guilt or shame around not doing enough. Or if you feel like a fraud or have “imposter syndrome” due to beliefs around what your practice should look like, how much you should be doing, or how much you believe other people are doing.

Join us as we try to find clarity for ourselves and our fellow creatives.”

This was held live on Zoom and includes questions from participants.
